Buyer's guide
Best bilingual paralegal services for U.S. law firms: how to compare
Four staffing models compete for the same budget — an in-house hire, a freelance marketplace, a general virtual-assistant agency, and legal-specific bilingual staffing. They are not interchangeable. This guide sets out the criteria that actually separate them, so you can evaluate any provider — including us — against the same standard.
Most comparisons of bilingual paralegal services stop at the hourly rate. That is the one number that reliably misleads: it excludes payroll taxes, benefits, equipment, workspace, recruiting, and the cost of replacing someone who leaves. It also says nothing about who is legally responsible for the person doing your case work.
The four criteria below are the ones that change outcomes for a firm — and they are the questions worth asking every provider on your shortlist.
The four criteria that separate providers
Employment model
Ask whether the person supporting your matters is a W-2 employee of the provider or an independent contractor. Contractors can hold several concurrent jobs — an established pattern in freelance work — which affects availability, confidentiality, and consistency.
Security and compliance
Company-issued equipment, monitored offices, IT redundancy, and breach coverage matter more than a signed NDA. Ask what the provider owns and controls, not what the worker promises.
Time-zone overlap
LATAM-based teams share U.S. business hours. Offshore providers in distant time zones create a delay on every clarification, which is the hidden cost most firms underestimate.
True cost
Compare the fully loaded onshore cost — salary, payroll taxes, benefits, equipment, workspace, recruiting, and turnover — against a single monthly seat rate, not against a raw hourly wage.
The four staffing models side by side
| Model | Employment | Cost | Training & oversight | Hours overlap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-house U.S. hire | W-2 of your firm | Full onshore cost + overhead | You recruit, train, and replace | Same office hours |
| Freelance marketplace | Independent contractor | Low hourly, variable | You vet and manage each person | Varies by individual |
| General VA / BPO agency | Usually contractor or offshore staff | Low, per hour or per ticket | Rarely legal-specific training | Often limited overlap |
| Legal-specific staffing (Bilingüe) | W-2 employee of the provider | Flat monthly seat, 60–70% less than onshore | Trained, supervised, and backed up by the provider | Full U.S. business-hours overlap |
Cost ranges describe typical market structures, not a quote. Run your own role through the savings calculator for a firm-specific comparison.
Where Bilingüe fits — and where it does not
A good fit
Immigration and immigration-adjacent firms with steady Spanish-speaking client volume that need a dedicated person inside their case-management system during U.S. business hours, with the provider carrying employment, equipment, and security responsibility.
A poor fit
Firms needing a few hours of ad-hoc work per month, work that requires physical presence in a U.S. office, or tasks that must be performed by a licensed U.S. attorney. A freelance marketplace or local contract attorney serves those better.
What we do not claim
Our staff are paralegals and support professionals, not attorneys, and they work under the supervision of your firm. We do not provide legal advice and we do not replace attorney judgment.
